With the recent release of the A Ma Maniere x Jordan Air Ship we thought we’d do a deep dive into the true original Jordan.

- The Big Reveal: Contrary to popular belief, Michael Jordan didn't sport the iconic Air Jordan 1 during his NBA debut on October 26, 1984. Instead, he graced the court with the lesser-known Nike Air Ship.

- A Sotheby's Reveal: The myth of the Air Jordan 1 being MJ's debut shoe was debunked in a 2021 Sotheby's auction. A pair of the original Airships sold for $1.472 million USD

- Why Not the Air Jordan 1?: MJ's signature shoe, the Air Jordan 1, was still in the production pipeline. In its absence, Jordan went with the already available Nike Air Ship, a precursor that, along with the Air Force 1 from 1982, played muse to the eventual design of the Jordan 1.

- Nike Air Ship's NBA Ban: In February 1985, the NBA issued a blanket ban on Jordan's sneakers due to a breach of the league's "uniform uniformity rules". The controversial black-and-red Air Ships didn't conform to the NBA's mandate that shoes must be either 51% white or 51% black - known as the 51% Rule. This led to Jordan accumulating fines.
